Asperger Syndrome

I have a patient coming to see me with Asperger's Disorder. He has already been treated with Naturopathy and Homeopathy and now acupuncture is the last resort. I have had no experience in treating this so was wondering if anyone has any advice.

I have not seen him yet so do not know any presenting symptoms. I guess I would just like to know if acupuncture can help.

    Thank you

  2. Hi Caroline,
Thank you so much for this addition. Whooah! I can't wait to hear more about this case and I hope we hear from someone who's had some experience with this. I've never treated Asperger's disorder myself but would love to hear the presenting symptoms when you see the patient and I may have some insights on the matter. If anything might help, acupuncture should because acupuncture can do wonders with autism and psychological disorders.
Hope to hear from you again.
    Warm regards, Soma.

The boy in this case actually has more of an ADHD presentation than Autism. There is very little evidence of the Asperger's. He is very small for his age, has poor eyesight and weak teeth (prone to cavities). As a baby he was given both breast milk and formula (soy and cows milk). He is fully immunised and had reactions to all- exacerbating the Asperger's.
His mother says the diet is very good but during treatment he talks about his rewards for laying still- Tiny Teddy biscuits and KFC for dinner. So it's hard to know what he's really eating.
His tongue is quite pale with very little coat and his pulse is thin.
I have treated him twice using acupuncture, moxa and cranio scaral therapy. He seems very relaxed during the treatment but then there hasn't been much lasting change.
His mother is open to him taking some herbs but I have been reading so much about GIT problems with Autism and ADHD that I wonder if there is any point in using herbs if his digestion is compromised. Should I just give something simple for his Spleen and not address the Kidney stuff yet? Any suggestions?

  4. Hi Caroline,
So nice to hear from you again. This boy I feel is a treatable case with the addition of herbal remedies. The fact that he peacefully receives his acupuncture treatment is a good sign. But in order to make it lasting, you need to dig in a bit deeper.
1/ Could you find out what homeopathic remedies have already been given to him and in what potency?
2/ What's his behavior like? Is he absent, inattentive or restless, agitated, violent..? Is he shy and withdrawn or extroverted? Is he the same at school and at home? How's his sleep? ADHD can be a lot of different things.
3/What's his digestion and elimination like? What does his mother call a good diet? does the child have specific food cravings?
4/ Does he prefer heat or cold and does he sweat easily?

From what you've already shared, I deduct that he must be Kidney Jing and Liver blood deficient with most likely some hyperactive Spleen Qi xu (quoting one of Julian Scott's terminology) from the formulas he had as a baby and some uncleared residual toxicity from his vaccinations.
Looking forward to hearing from you again.
    Thanks, Soma.

    Hi Soma
I found out he was actually on Bach Flower and Bush Flower Remedies. It was in 2007, so over 12 months ago since he stopped taking the remedies. He was on many different things like Aspen, Cerato, Chicory, Gentian, Holly, Larch, Olive, Sweet Chestnut, White Chestnut, Wild Rose.

His behaviour is inattentive and restless. He can become frustrated as well. He is generally quite outgoing and chatty. His behaviour is the same at home and at school. He sleeps very soundly but can sometimes take a while to get to sleep.

His digestion is poor- tending to loose bowels with undigested food. He doesn't sit down to eat but willhave a mouthful then go away and come back to eat more. Sometimes his mother has to actually feed him. He craves sweet food all of the time.

He is more hot than cold and it is hard to keep shoes on him.

I don't seem to getting far with him and it is really hard to get the mother to control his food. He is still eating sweets, ice cream and junk food regularly!

I look forward to hearing from you,

    Thanks!

  6. Hi Caroline,
Thanks for the follow-up. I don't know much about Bach or Bush flower remedies so I can't really comment on those. Have you put him on a herbal formula and if yes, which one? What is the point prescription you are using? Also besides being inattentive, restless and frustrated at times, which many children are, what is his real pathology? What is the main complaint here? What warranted the diagnosis of Asperger's or ADHD?
His diet is definitely atrocious and unless the mother can control it, you will not be able to make any lasting changes. Maybe you should treat the mother. She's probably overwhelmed and the child is manipulating and controlling her. Typical case of hyperactive Spleen xu! At least if you can start him on a herbal formula which tonifies Spleen Qi, clears damp and phlegm and calms the spirit, that will be a good start and it will be easier to change his diet.
Please keep us posted and don't give up too soon.
    All the best,
    Soma.

  7. Hi Caroline,
Just one more word. Are you familiar or have access to homeopathy? If yes, I might suggest a remedy that could help him but please send me more specific symptoms.
    Thanks,
    Soma.

    Hi Soma
I started him on Si Jun Zi Tang with the addition of Dang Gui and Bai Shao, and used Fu Shen instead of Fu Ling.
With the acupuncture treatments I use Du 20 everytime with usually any combination of St 36, Ki 3, He 7, Moxa on the abdomen.
I am not familiar with any homeopathic treatments but would be open to using them if it would help.

    Thanks,
    Caroline

  9. Hi Caroline,
Still waiting to get some specific symptoms on this kid and I'll be happy to pass on specific herbs which should help better. Si jun Zi tang with Dang gui and bai shao are NOT going to make much difference for the digestion or ADHD syndromes, I'm afraid.
    Thanks, Soma.
