Hi,
I was wondering if you could help me with my 4yo daughter. She seems fine during the day but as soon as she lays down at night, this phlegmy cough starts up, sounds deep in her chest. Actually, now that I think about it, she coughs a little during the day too, but not as loud and incessant as at night. Otherwise, no other sypmtoms.
Gotta go. Baby's up. Thank you for any ideas.

Dear Jessica,
I guess it would be useful to know how long has your daughter had this cough and if you've tried anything to help it so far. It's also of vital importance to know if the phlegm is loose or sticky, clear, white or yellow-green or is she not able to bring up anything? You say the cough is loud and incessant; Does it come as a fit? Does it sound like she's choking or is it like a tickling in a throat that won't stop? is it more rattly or harsh and barky?
As you see the more precise you can be, the more correct the remedy.
Are you an acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist and what kind of remedies do you have access to?
Waiting for your reply.

Please pardon my lack of details earlier. It was a spur of the moment idea to write in the wee hours of the morning. And thank you so much for your reply.
Yes, I'm a nationally cert. and licensed acupuncturist/herbalist though I haven't been in practice since I graduated four years ago due to embracing motherhood with my two little ones, so I'm a little rusty. I'm in a remote place (population 200) and the only access I have to Chinese remedies is what I can get online.
She's had the cough for about two weeks and I haven't done anything for it. She doesn't bring up any phlegm. Its a barky type cough (like a seal) that I guess sounds like she might be choking. Her tongue has a thin white coat. The cough is pretty absent during the day. Otherwise, there have been no other symptoms. If there is any connection, her 16mo. old sister was sick in the last week, vomiting for three days and non-stop diarrhea for the next three days but she's doing great now.
I hope that is a little more helpful. I appreciate your advice and for taking the time. And one of these days/months/years I would love to take one of your seminars.

Thanks Jessica for the follow-up. Sounds like a croupy cough. Actually there is a homeopathic remedy which corresponds exactly to what your daughter has. The name is SPONGIA TOSTA, excellent for harsh type of coughs sounding like a seal's bark and worse at night lying down.
If you have access to homeopathy, this would probably be the best since she doesn't have other symptomology and it's easier for children to take homeopathy than herbs. Give it in the 30 potency, 1 dose before going to sleep until cough is better.
It's hard to know if there is any connection with the vomiting and diarrhea of her sister but there's obviously some viruses/bacteria going around.
From TCM view, this is a phlegm heat cough with some Yin vacuity. You can try QING FEI YIN but it should be modified by adding Gua Lou Shi, Zhi Mu, Mai Men Dong and Tian Men Dong. 1 gram, twice a day is a good dosage for a 4 year old.
Let us know how it goes.
All the best, Soma.Posted 1 year ago #
