Acute conjunctivitis

    I was wondering what herbal medicine would be recommended for acute conjunctivitis. I have given long dan xie gan tang with mixed results. Thanks!

    Hello Jennifer,
    Sorry I didn't get your post until today.(some technical problem). Anyway here are a few herbal formulas you can try for acute conjunctivitis.
    Of course you need to diagnose and differentiate the syndromes to get the best results.
    1/So if it's part of a wind-heat pattern, use yinqiao plus Ju Hua, Man Jing Zi and Bai Ji Li.
    2/If it's a heat pattern both interior and exterior, or an exterior heat pattern with strong internal heat, use Fang Feng Tong Sheng San modified: you may substract Da Huang if there is no constipation and add Ju Jua and Man Jing Zi.
    3/If it's an internal heat and damp pattern, use Huang Lian Shang Qing Wan and add man Jing Zi to the formula.
    Long Dan Xie Gan will only be useful if the conjunctivitis is part of a Liver/ GB heat or dampheat pattern.
