Kevin’s case
This is a current and interesting pediatric case that I felt like sharing with all the forum members. I invite any comments, suggestions or anything you’d like to share. Thank you.
Kevin is a 12 year-old boy. His mother brought him to my practice in mid-December to find out if I could help his hearing. He was diagnosed with hearing impairment at the age of 2.
His mother had toxemia during her pregnancy. Kevin was born premature at 26 weeks and needed oxygen for the first 9 months of his life.
In spite of a very poor prognosis from his doctor concerning his mental abilities, Kevin does go to school and speaks. It is difficult to understand what he says because of the way he pronounces words, unless one pays very close attention. His first language is Dutch but he manages to speak English and even some Indonesian relatively well. He’s behind at school, yet he’s very bright and curious about everything.
Physically he’s tall and skinny. He has lazy eyes and wears thick glasses. He has a big appetite, loves chocolate and ice cream but vomits easily and frequently. He has a tendency towards high fevers, colds and flus and has been given plenty of antibiotics. He’s rather hot and sweats easily.. His energy level is low during the day but he is restless at night. He’s very afraid of the dark, being alone, ghosts, dogs and thunderstorms.
He has lots of excess wax in his nose and ears. Palpation revealed nodulations along the SCM muscle on his neck.
I diagnosed him with Yin and Jing deficiency with damp/phlegm accumulation in the Shaoyang channels.
On the first visit, I tried to needle him but he was absolutely terrified.
I used the sho-ni-shin tools giving him a general treatment along the main channels and stimulating GB 20 and 43, TB 5 and 3 by tapping with the sesshokushin, and finally around the ear on TB 17 and 21. I also used the moxa thermie on LU 9, ST 36 and KD 3.
I decided to start the treatment with homeopathy rather than a herbal formula and chose PHOSPHORUS 30. His mother was instructed to give him one dose a day for the next 3 days.
When I saw Kevin again about 3 weeks later (because of the end of the year holidays), his mother reported that for the first few days after the treatment, he became very hyper. He just had so much energy that he didn’t know what to do with it. His mother saw it as a positive development because he also started to sleep better at night, seems to have more courage and initiatives and has less fears. Kevin started a rock climbing class and loves it.
When he came for his second treatment, I was able to use a few needles on his arm and leg. I decided to use the moxa thermie around his ears and for the first time, he just relaxed and totally let go of his resistance. His mother commented that she’s never seem him looking so peaceful.
As I won’t be able to see him for the next 6 weeks, I instructed the mother to continue with moxa around his ears and to communicate with me via e-mail about the follow-up with his homeopathic remedy..
I’ll share more about Kevin’s case as we go along.
