No Talking

    Hi Soma
I have a patient who I treated for Eczema at 18 mths. The Ezcema cleared with the help of strict dietary modification (no herbs). Since then and for the past 6 months his speech has gone from being able to say a few words only making a high pitched sound. His hearing has been checked and is fine.
He was very prone to damp as was on Soy formula from 4 months old. He was also prone to vomiting/reflux and was put on Zoton as Zantac did not work. Is it possible that his speech could be affected by dampness or phlegm?
He is very susceptible to colds and runny nose and his diet is no longer strict since the eczema has cleared. I am not currently treating him but his mother has asked about the lack of talking and whether acupuncture and herbs can help. He is nearly 2 years old.
I attended your paediatric seminar in Sydney in 2007.
    Thank you for this forum!

Was this child vaccinated? Sometimes the mercury toxicity from the vaccines can cause speech problems. Also, scalp acupuncture on the speech center of the brain can be helpful. Best of luck, Dr. Sharada

  3. Dear Caroline,

Thank you for posting this interesting case and I hope you will try to help him with herbs and acupuncture or sho-ni-shin.
First, the comment from Dr. Sharada is very valid. Do check on his vaccination schedule and if he had any reactions to any of them.
From his history, he strikes me as a baby with severe food sensitivities and allergies (could have started from taking soy formula or even before),fetal toxins (eczema) and low immunity (frequent colds and runny nose). These symptoms are exactly what the formula Huang qi jian zhong tang is for. Now, taking a drug like zoton (could you tell us when and for how long he was on that?) can also have contributed to both qi deficiency and added toxicity. Whether phlegm and damp accumulation are a result or the underlying cause of the disharmony, they are definitely a major element in the illness. You may want to check his eras again and get a second opinion for excess wax or some type of blockage. If the ears are really totally fine, you may want to check the throat and vocal chords or find out if the boy has had any big emotion or fright that might have affected his Heart.
Whatever the result, I believe herbs and acupuncture can help him so keep us posted.
If anybody else has some experience in this matter, I welcome any other comments or suggestions.
    All the best Caroline,
    Soma.

Thank you Dr Sharada and Soma for your replies.
This child was vaccintated with all scheduled vaccinations for Australia- which is a lot! He was given panadol before all of them so had no reactions.
There was no significant event in his life that occurred when the talking stopped, or at any time in his life that his mum is aware of.
I will get him in for a treatment again as i have not seen him since the eczema last year.

Thnk you so much for the advice.

  5. I would like to add to the wonderful advise already posted.
To encourage talking, take the time to talk to and sing to the boy. While you are in this special time of interaction, take his feet and press the edge of your thumbnail to the tips of all his toes (if you are home and setting is conducive) and all his fingers when in a social setting. The fingers and toes represent the head. To activate speech, it is good to induce reflex points that will bring qi (energy) and blood to the head (through the feet most effectively). You can also massage the rest of his soles and palms should you so please because it increases over-all strength and bolsters immunity.

My grandson starts to sing when I give myself the freedom to sing to him even we are in public transportation. I do not allow social norms to dictate what I cannot do for the benefit of my grandson's ability to learn and voice himself. I repeat syllables for him to mimic even though it sounds incomprehensible to others. Even nonsensical sounds are utterances. So keep talking, singing and making sounds around him.

Children are ultra-sensitive. Make sure you are cleared of worry and anxiety when in his presence. Always see him as a special being with his own dharma (mission) to fulfill here. He has come with his own gifts, talents and abilities. Always picture in your minds eye the highest and best for him and you will attract that. Create loving fun time with him and relax. Relaxation allows more flow, tightening constricts that flow. This is your life...make it happy for both of you. Best wishes.

    Love always

  6. Dear Caroline,

I am very happy you will see the child for treatment again because he has great chances of recovery with all the input you are receiving through this forum. Thank you for Alma's latest advice. It is something wonderful to pass on to the mother of the boy and show her exactly where to hold and press.
When you do see the boy and are able to assess his "shen", you can make a diagnosis based on observing (colors, rashes or discolorations, secretions), palpating (skin, moisture, temperature, tightness, glands and nodules, etc) smelling and listening as well as all the facts from the mum. And let me know if you need more help or input in choosing a herbal or/and sho-ni-shin prescription or acupuncture point selection although I feel that sho-ni-shin would be a better modality to use for such a deficient child.
Best of luck and thanks again.

I am so happy to have found this forum. I too have been treating a very deficient two year old that has chronic eczema, severe food allergies and low immunity. I have had her on herbs for 8 months now and she is doing really well. My question is, how long should I continue to give her herbs. She stopped taking them at after 4 months and the eczema/frequent colds returned so I just put her back on them again. Thanks for your guidance Soma.

  8. Dear Jennifer,
Thank you for this new post. Chronic eczema and food allergies do require a long time approach especially when it starts very early on in life. It's wonderful she's doing very well with your herbal prescriptions and of course you want to stop the herbs at a certain point. I would suggest:
1/ You also give that child energetic treatments such as sho-ni-shin or acupuncture at least once a week for 2 to 3 months. Treatments should be given 2 or 3 times a week during acutes or outbreak times. No sho-ni-shin on skin rash, but no needle if child is very deficient. Use tiger warmer to tonify.
2/ Change your herbal formula periodically as her condition changes and give her breaks, let's say 3 weeks on, 1 week off and start again, or 6 days on, 1 day off...
3/ Last but not least, check her diet and make the necessary changes. That's the most important to ensure lasting results. Let me know if you have questions on dietary recommendation for eczema and food allergies.
    All the best,
    Soma.
