Hi again Soma,
I have a grand baby 31/2 who has enlarged adenoids and tonsils, for the most part he is healthy and i believe he has been on antibiotics 1-2 times in his life. He recently had a very bad URI and got an ear infection.
I see him twice a year but just flew out to take care of him for a few days while Mom had a mini vacation. He is health active has a good appetite, (going through a bit of a fussy stage right now)
We would like for him to NOT have them removed. Can you give me some guidance with your experience what herbal rx would be a good one for him? I started him on probiotics, Vit D3 and will send him some chewable fish oil tabs.
Thanks in advance for your time. Diane Cridennda

Hi Soma

I am not sure if you remember, but my daughter Naomi had severe cradle cap and eczema when she was an infant. With your herbal recommendations and sho-ni-shin, they cleared up after a few weeks. About 6 months ago, I noticed her cradle cap returning and it is now very flaky over her entire scalp and even her eyebrows have become flaky! It isn't yellow or thick really, more dry with large flakes. She has always had more loose stools than formed but about the time her cradle cap came back, her stools became well formed. They have since become a little more loose but still formed. If I give her Bao He Wan, her stools are very well formed but soon after I stop giving it to her, they return to being smelly and looser. She does have athlete's foot and I recently started giving her fermented coconut kefir with probiotics and it has almost cleared up. She also has a yeast rash in her groin that comes and goes - very mild but has been difficult to get rid of. She is a very sensitive girl but does have plenty of energy! She has a very big appetite and I have noticed if she eats too much, her stools are definitely looser. Sleep is good, energy good, very attached. I do give her xiao chai hu tang periodically although I have not given it to her in a few months. Any advice and/or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Soma
I have been asked to take a case of a 6 week old baby with Erbs Palsy. We treated two chidlren in China when I was there for this - with electro acupuncture. We treated them every day initially and then every second day and had really good results

Has anyone treated a child with this before and has anyone used sho ni shin
I just have reservations doing electro as in China they don't have the same concern over a child crying during treatment etc and also I don't know if the child would be able to come as regularly for treatment

Anyone with any comments on this would be great
Many thanks

Hi Soma

I have been asked to give a 5 month old baby a treatment for tight shoulder muscles.
A chld health nurse recommended physio for the baby to looesn tight shouler muscles on one side of his neck. He really favours turning to his left side.
I am planning on doing some massage and acupressure. I know sho-ni-shin is good for internatl situations, would it also be effective for musculoskeletal condidions?

akacupuncture on "11 year old with IgM Nephropathy"

Hi Soma,

Thank you for inviting us to post on your forum. We are looking for any ideas, suggestions or questions to help us probe this case for new treatment ideas and strategies. Acupuncture, herbs and western medical treatments have not significantly moved things forward yet and we could really use your help to rethink what’s going on here from a Chinese and/or Western Medical standpoint. It’s a bit long but here are some pertinent details:

We are treating an 11-yr-old boy who has been diagnosed with Igm
Nephropathy. This is a very rare type of Nephrosis that makes up the smallest percentage of those affected by this disease. He falls in the category of frequent relapsing/steroid-dependent or steroid-resistant nephrosis. The filtering mechanism in the kidneys apparently becomes compromised via an autoimmune pathological process which results in spontaneously spilling essential proteins in the urine. The only options in Western Medicine are immunosuppressants and in the case of frequent-relapsing nephrosis where renal biopsy reveals no scarring (as is the case in our patient) a course of combined cytotoxic and prednisone therapy offers a 50% chance to go into remission. Recovery is deemed permanent if the child is symptom-free and off medications for more than 2 years.

Despite regular treatment since age 3 with corticosteroids (prednisone)combined with lysinopril he continues to relapse. Predictably, the steroid usage has caused many problems including stunted growth, body swelling and puffy face, night sweats, sluggish bowels, insomnia, irritability, fatigue and frequent colds affecting sinus and upper respiratory system etc. To deal with the stunted growth his pediatric nephrologist now has him taking growth hormone to counter the effects of prednisone. The physician is also putting a lot of pressure on his mother to take him off of prednisone and try putting him on Prograf which would be an “off-label” use of the drug (highly toxic with terrible side effects-normally given to organ transplant recipients to wipe out their immune system). I spoke to a Pediatrician and fellow acupuncturist who teaches at UPenn and she felt that Prograf was totally inappropriate and dangerously toxic option to try at this point given the healthy biopsy reports on the kidneys and the child’s age. While prolonged prednisone usage is not ideal she felt at this point it’s the least damaging route and that time is on his side.

He has been featured on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Tyra Banks show and also on the Doctor Show. With his mom’s help he also started a foundation which provides special pillows for hospitalized children. To keep up with the demand he has enlisted the local senior center and local schools to help make the pillows. He has written a book calling for compassion for children who are ill or look different as a result of illness. He speaks at schools, churches, civic organizations and does book readings around the State as well.

A couple other points of interest: He is number 9 in a family of 11 kids and is the only child in the family demonstrating obvious signs of Jing deficiency or constitutional weakness. During one particularly bad relapse 2 years ago, he was mistakenly overdosed in the hospital on prednisone in which he fell into a near suicidal state for a brief period of time. Also 2 years ago he had a tailbone injury falling from his bicycle. Corresponding with these two incidents, there has been a significant drop in energy ever since.

Although quite short for his age and pudgy from the prednisone swelling he stands tall and moves authoritatively and is quietly confident. He is very smart. When he comes in for a treatment he fluctuates between being playful and warm- full of contagious enthusiasm or he is grim, cynical, complaining or just withdrawn. Overall there is sadness and he just seems very very old for his age. There is a strong bond with his mom but also a karmic tangle that has them locking horns a lot. He seems to do better when she is not in the room with him.

Pulse highlights:

Pulse is hesitant, sporadically irregular and very rapid. It is pronounced above the Qi level. Middle right position is alarmingly absent at blood and organ depth. Left middle pounding with a lot of heat. Left Proximal position slippery and wide with a distressed squirmy quality like a ball of worms at the organ depth. A short course of low dose combo of Yunnan Bai Yao and Sheng Mai San significantly improved the irregular beat but it we do still find it occasionally.

Tongue:

Pale, wet with slightly red tip. Tongue Vasiculates and is slightly swollen in the HT, LU region and has a very pronounced dip in ST/SP. Pronounced purple veins under tongue.

Diagnosis:

Fire constitution- TW.
KI Yin, Qi, Jing deficiency
Lung and Spleen deficiency
Liver Stagnation
Blood heat
Yin deficiency heat from steroid

Herbs:

On a family friend’s suggestion he saw a Chinese herbalist in California who prescribed Liu Wei Di Huang Wan…which he has taken for 6-8 months. He recently stopped because his doctor in an emotionally intense episode with his mother insisted that it may carry unknown risks. To appease the physician they stopped but I think they would consider continuing with herbs if we made a strong case for it.

Acupuncture Treatment:

Overall, acupuncture has helped alleviate some of the head colds and respiratory challenges, improved bowels and we’ve seen slight improvement in pulse over several months. His energy and attitude improves temporarily after treatment- but fatigue and sporadic irritability persists after a few days or so. The protein spilling relapses have not diminished in frequency.

We’ve been treating him pretty consistently 1X weekly since March. We have done 5E Clearing treatments: ED’s ID’s, and EE blocks (LR/LU, SI/BL and wSP/HT). (A/E & LR/LU EE Blocks multiple times). We have not done a CV/GV block given his age and the emotional instability and volatility his mother has shown. (BTW, what’s the min. age one would consider with that treatment?)

We’ve treated points along Ren and Du with moxa and needle tonification. We have also treated Ren/Du/Dai/Chong using master and couple pts. Our support has mostly focused on tonifying and nourishing KI, clearing heat from the LR. Tonifying SP and LU and consistent constitutional support in Fire. EE block on SI/BL and Super Ming Men treatment were noticeably effective for improving energy and pulse, but only temporarily.

We would really appreciate any ideas for strategies moving forward.

Thanks!
Kevin and Sam

Hello Soma,

I've enjoyed your website, and was immediately attracted to it by a mere few words on a google search, your experience and competence came through right away.

I am a TCM practitioner and mother of said 18 year old young man. I am perplexed by a recurrent cough/cold pattern that P. has manifested since early childhood. In keeping with not treating one's own family, I took him, about 10 years ago, to a wonderful homeopath who prescribed phosphorous, successfully. For a few years he was ok. Unfortunately the homeopath passed away, and in the intervening years the problem has insidiously crept back. Time to act again, and I would love your feedback as you are trained in both medicines.

Here is the usual acute manifestation: fairly typical head cold onset with one day of chills and or fever, moderate nasal discharge, followed by 1 - 2 weeks of cough: single cough at a time, loud and startling, as if something is forcefully expelled, but very scanty expectoration. One such cough, followed by another and so on, at intervals of seconds to minutes. May evolve into hacking night cough, or just go on this way for several days, until finally it loosens and slowly dissipates. Morning and evening cough may well continue, in this single cough at at time pattern, til the next cold comes, often a month later. Concurrently there is often one red eye, and itchy. Another feature is that the cough may suddenly appear to be gone for a day or two, only to come back and pick up where it left off.
Chronic background presentation includes a very thin build, good appetite, hyperopia, emotional sensitivity, fatigue, tense jaw, clicking joints, anxiety, neck and shoulder tension, slightly enlarged neck nodes with no tenderness, very cold hands and feeling "out of it".
Also seasonal allergies.

Another TCm herbalist prescribed XIAO CHAI HU TANG last fall. Taking it for several months in granule form did improve the cold hands, fatigue and out of it but the cough/colds came as usual, 5 so far this winter. Additionally P. got mononucleosis in the middle of winter, but recovered fairly well in about 5 weeks. He did get secondary hepatitis and splenomegaly, which both retreated promptly, although the neck glands are still more enlarged than is usual.

Modified xiao chai hu tang makes sense to me as a long term treatment, but nothing whatsoever seems to work once the cough has started.

I am not sure whether to pursue homeopathy, or TCM , or both, and whether phosphorous would still be appropriate, after all this time, and at what potency. I've not been able to find a local homeopath that I trust. For the moment I feel like a shoemaker whose children are barefoot....

Sorry for the long post and thank you so much, in advance.

adina.

julia fisher on "Swollen tonsils and adenoids in 3 year old"

Hi Soma,
Julia here, first to thank you so much for your guidance on my 2 year old patient with mixed CP. I will update you further when I have the time. We have completed 2 10day treatment series so far, and the experience has been quite interesting.
But right now, I have a more acute situation to ask you about. I have a 3 year old patient who came to me with tonsils so swollen that he could not breath well at night. No sore throat or ear pain or nasal congestion. He had had a lingering cough 1 month before that never fully resolved. His pediatrician told his mother that she wasn't worried about infection at the moment, but if the swelling lasted for more than 6 weeks than she would want to take them out.
So... I did shonishin (he wouldn't tolerate much more than that), and prescribed blue poppy's xiao chai hu tang tincture. I saw him 4 days in a row and saw the tonsil swelling retreat dramatically. BUT, his nose started running (green and sticky) increasingly over the four days, and now he can breathe fine out of his throat but his adenoids are very swollen and he is waking repeatedly throughout the night unable to breathe out of his nose. His mom is worried that he is not getting enough O2 at night and is not getting any sleep herself.
My thinking is that the lingering pathogen is moving out from Shaoyang to Yangming, which is how it should move, right? So my first thought is to switch to the Allerease Jr. tincture from Blue Poppy to address the sinuses, but I have 2 concerns about that: 1. He's starting to get dry (dry congestion), and I'm afraid that both the XCHT and the Allerease are too drying at this point. 2. Is it too soon to transition off the XCHT if his tonsils are still at all swollen? I don't want to stop expelling the pathogen, right?
Perhaps I should switch to the Allerease and continue addressing Shaoyang with the shonishin alone?
Of course the other thing I am worried about is the pathogen shifting again into the ears, which can happen with badly swollen adenoids, and potentially damaging hearing.
FYI, he has a very hot and energetic constitution. He is a phlegmy kid due to diet, and I'm working with mom and dad on that. Right now he is completely off sugar and dairy. He is strong willed and very yang. He is able to focus and be calm. His tongue last time I checked was a fairly normal pink with thick greasy and white coat, which is a lot less heat than when he first came in.
Any guidance is much appreciated ~ this is my first experience with this sort of thing!
Thank you!
Julia

Hi there Soma

I have a case that I would love some feedback and/or recommendations. I am treating a 16 m.o. child with very painful nightime gas. She has no gas or bloating during the day but wakes up crying a few hours after she has fallen asleep. This can sometimes go on the whole night with her waking every hour or two. This has been going on since she was 4 months old. Her stools are formed and occassionally will have undigested food. There is sometimes a strong odor but not on a daily basis. She usually has two BM's a day and if she has only one, her Mom says this will almost always be a rough night. She did have a small rash on her cheek which is almost gone since she started treatment. Her appetite is good and she eats a very healthy diet. Her Mom did an elimination diet when she exclusively nusing and wasn't able to pinpoint any food allergies or sensitivities. I have suggested to the Mom that she try and cut down on her nightime nursing and she is down to nursing twice during the night. She is a charming child with a very sweet temperment. Even though she doesn't get much sleep, she is rarely irritable.

I have had her on spleen tonics with herbs to move food stagnation and clear heat for about about a month now. She has improved 30-40% but is still waking up nightly with gas. The past few weeks, there has been very little improvement. I have been giving her sho-ni-shin but not consistently because the family has been out of town. She really enjoys the treatments and does very well for a few nights after sho-ni-shin.

Would love your insight on this case. Thank you for your time!

Hi,
I just received a call from a mom who has an 18 month old with Mixed CP due to lack of oxygen before birth. He has been seeing an acupuncturist for 6 weeks who is doing Liv 3 and LI 4 with no needle retention, once a week. The acupuncturist is recommnending weekly treatments for 6 - 12 months before any improvements will be seen.
The mom is wondering if this is a reasonable course of treatment. I checked Julian Scott's book and he recommends a much higher frequency of treatment and uses that combination for spasticity but other points for flaccidity. It sounds as though the child has more spasticity than flaccidity. Scott also recommends other points in combination. There has not been any change from the acupuncture yet.
The mom has the child on an organic diet and is giving as much oils as possible. She is using Udo's oil (he wouldn't take cod liver oil), as well as avocado.
Does anyone have any recommendations on what the frequency of treatment should be, as well as other ideas? Would shonishin be indicated if the child accepts needles? What about herbs? Supplements?
Thanks,

Hi,
I posted this on holistic pediatrics forum and thought I would also post here. I have included the response I got from Randall Neustaedter. Can anyone suggest a good kidney tonic I could use for her?
Thanks,
Marleen Greenberg, R.Ac.
Calgary, Alberta

I just saw a 14 month old girl who was diagnosed with bilateral bladder reflux after developing a kidney infection at the age of 8 months. She is being treated prophylactically with novo trimel 2.5 ml/day to prevent further infections. Mom has been told there is a 50 - 60% chance of her outgrowing the reflux. She has eczema and cradle cap (not sure when that started) and uses a moisturizing non-medicated cream daily for that. She broke out in hives last month after eating peanut butter for the first time and saw an allergist who did the sratch test. She is only allergic (on the milder side) to peanuts, but is now avoiding all tree nuts.
She has been fully vaccinated, was breast fed until 8 months and then put on Nestle Good Start wtih omega 3 & 6, eats all foods and drinks milk daily. Vaginal non-medicated birth.
I have recommended an infant or children's probiotic daily while she is on the antibiotics and gave her fermented cod liver oil to take daily. The mom was hesitant to take her off all dairy until she plans to wean her from her bottle at 18 months but was agreeable to trying her on goat's milk products for a month to see if the eczema improves with that. I have instructed the mother in how to massage the kidney, stomach and lung channels for support. I have also recommended avoiding all refined flours and sugars, and using sprouted grains whenever possible.
her shen is very good, there are no dark circles under her eyes or veins anywhere on her face. She is not a picky eater and loves to be touched. Bowels are twice a day and well-formed. Sleep is good. She is generally very happy and engaged.
My question is about the reflux which I think was the original cause of most of the issues. Is there anything that can be done herbally to help with that? Would it be worthwhile to give her a formula for the eczema or is it reasonable to first wait to see if changing and then stopping dairy helps? I am trying not to overload the mom.
Thank you,
Marleen Greenberg, R.Ac., NTP
Calgary, Alberta

from Randall Neustaedter:
Depending on what degree of reflux (which they should know by now from the xrays) there are two options. One is to take antibiotics, as she is doing, the other is to put her on some antibacterial herbs (such as the Evergreen Herbal ABX formula or similiar liquid extract) and do periodic urine tests every two to three months (either dipsticks or cultures) to check for bacteria. This may not be feasible if she's not potty trained yet. Constant probiotics. And I would give her a kidney tonification formula to see if you can encourange progress in the the urinary tract development. Treating the underlying allergic component would be good as well with the protocols set out in my book The Holistic Baby Guide.

Hi Soma
This is the case I mentioned:
My sister is now 35 weeks pregnant today(third pregnancy) and is suffering from vaginal varicose veins and she now also has a bad case of Thrush
I have not managed to see her yet since she is suffering from this but I will see her this weekend so my details are not very comprehensive

Symptoms are very sore, red and some times itchy swollen vulva. She also has haemorrhoids and has suffered from these since her first pregnancy.
The veins on her legs are now black

Her baby is also tranverse lying so lying more towards the left and so her pain is more on the left. Would you recommend BL 67 at this stage to help move the baby as that may help ease her pain?

Typically she is someone that suffers from damp-heat patterns and liver-heat patterns - i.e. I have treated her for sinus problems which she suffers badly from and she always has alot of phlegm. She was also suffering alot previously from liver yang rising headaches that i have treated her successfully for.

I would really like to give her some help and ease the pain somewhat as she is getting no relief from anything, but as she is so far gone in her pregnancy I want to be careful regarding what treatment to give her. If you have any guidance regarding treatment it would be really appreciated or anything she could apply to the area to ease the heat and pain

Let me know what other information that would help
Many thanks

Hi Soma

I have a nine year old daughter who last November started out with a cold that developed into a Wind-Heat, I put her on some pediatric herbs for the wind-heat. In a couple of days she developed a very nasty cough
Her main symptoms was a phlemgy loud cough and then inhaling was very stressed, trying to gasp for air.
She would also vomit.
At night it got really bad, and she woke up many times through the night gasping for air, only to have to cough and then vomit.
At first she vomited yellow phlegm, but after two weeks of this there was no phlegm, but the cough still remained and she would still cough and gasp for air and this would still cause her to vomit.
It is now February and she still has a cough, but with no phlegm or vomiting.

Her 6 year old brother now has the cough, he is in the coughing and vomiting stage with no more yellow phlegm, he will just cough and then vomit and spit a little phlegm (not yellow anymore). I tried pediatric herbs for cough but again he is on his fourth week, and wakes up many times through the night gasping for air and then coughing, with or with out vomiting.

Any suggestions. The doctors checked my daughter out for whooping cough, it was negative. One doctor said it was just a virus and it will take time, the other doctor said early on that it was bronchitis.
He has had to sleep with me for four weeks at this point so I can help him sit up and breath.

Thank you

Hi,

I was hoping you might be able to help me with my daughter. Here is her case history:

Anna, 22mos.

Current signs and symptoms: (for the past 6 weeks)
loose stools, undigested (though most food is minced or pureed),
always explosive and painful with passing, she bounces up and down as she goes
and her face turns red,
feels immediately better after passing
we go back and forth to the toilet for sometimes over whole morning or afternoon before she finally goes
she often says hurting or scared while passing (a couple times she said "stuck")

lots of gas all day long and at night

tummy pain throughout day that keeps her up some nights

abdominal distention (feels tight), often better after passing stools

appetite is good

no spit up or vomiting

no bad breath

pale face, sometimes I notice a slight blue coloring at top of nose

no coating on tongue

fussyness, discomfort (says tummy hurting) throughout the day but often more in afternoon/night

rough skin on back and eczema-like rash on bottom and backs of thighs and knees - not severe though and I never see her itching at it so..., had a couple patches of ringworm which have cleared up with antifungal cream

despite her discomfort, she has good energy and his mostly a happy child - amazingly!

For almost two weeks now I have taken out all of the top allergenic foods (although just took salmon out of her diet two days ago). Her rash immediately improved though it has not cleared yet. And the severity of her pain seems lessened.
Started probiotics a few days ago.
Vit D and Colloidal Silver were recommended by the holistic MD but haven't used them yet.
Stopped breastfeeding 4 days ago

She also has a cold right now with a stuffy nose and sneezing/coughing
And she's teething! So, rough time for my little one right now.

Previous signs and symptoms:

She had tummy pain, almost always at night for the first year of her life
Terrible insomnia due to the pain, could only sleep if I carried her upright, so I would be up walking her throughout the night and for her naps during the day

Stools were often mucousy, stool test revealed a little blood

No noticeable rashes as a baby (except a few bad diaper rashes)

Exclusively, breastfed, nursed very frequently day and night

Attempted soy formula at one point which caused projectile vomiting

I emliminated so many foods from my diet trying to figure out what it might be, which I never did because she never really improved no matter what (and I was down to turkey and zucchine for a while)
I did probiotics, etc....

She's had no vaccines and no other medications

I had a systemic yeast infection during her pregnancy due to antibiotics I had taken for a D&C just a couple months before becoming pregnant. I suspect I may have had a leaky gut and given her one via breastfeeding.

On my husband's side, there are some signs of food intolerances, though not full awareness of them as such and one sister-in-law with Crohn's.

I do appreciate any help. Thank you.

I have a question about my daughter Naomi. I had given her the modified xiao chai hu tang/ dang gui yin zi for about 8 weeks for the LPF. The lymph nodes did seem to soften a bit. She was definitely in a better mood and her stools were very well formed when she was on the formula. I stopped giving her the herbs about a month ago. Almost immediately after stopping the herbs she starting having very sticky, unformed stools on a daily basis. There is also quite a bit of undigested food. Her stools were looser before she was on the xiao chai hu tang, but not this smooshy. They often have quite a strong odor. Her appetite has also really gone down. She has always had an excellent appetite but after we stopped the herbs, it has gradually gotten worse and worse and she will now sometimes take only a few bites and be done. Also, she is very fussy since she stopped the formula - lots of tantrums and wakes up very grumpy somedays! She has also had ringworm and what looked like very mild athlete's foot - I treated both with the Blue Poppy antifungal ointment with great results. I am not sure if I should go ahead and start up the xiao chai hu tang again or consider something else. Any imput would be very appreciated.

In gratitude,

I have been treating a 40 yr old lady, mother of 2, who initially came to me for allergy/hayfever. She has SP deficiency with a lot of dampness although she is very thin. Also Kidney deficiency with hair loss after pregnancy and other post pregnancy worsening of symptoms. Lots of digestive problems - bloating, intolerance to diary. She is actually very health conscious and had a good diet although i feel she detoxes herself too much.Tongue is swollen and usually has thick greasy coating.
I have been doing phlegm and damp removal points when the phlegm is bad, and when better I have been doing lots of spleen tonification, and always kidney tonification.
I have had her on Bu Zhong Yi Zhi Wan (plus Shen Qi da Bu Wan)on and off, and also Er Chen Wan when phlegm is bad - when it is bad,she is totally clogged up, lots of phlegm expulsion, head clogged, very tired.. almost to the point of drowning in it.
She seems to get better and then goes backwards... then it is almost like we are back to square 1 again.
Recently she did some Gut detox herbs Qing Chang Tiao Jun Fang and the week after passed some short round worms. She is still feeling lousy, no energy but I take it as a good sign that the worms are being expelled, as her tongue then cleared up.. and is the best i have seen it yet.

I have heard that it is possible for the middle jiao to be STUCK and therefore prevent the transformation of water. Can someone enlighten me on this? It seems that anything I do has only a shortlived effect - the phlegm goes away and then comes back again no matter how much tonification I am doing..... there is continual dampness.
Has this got something to do with the KI weakness... all her allergies got worse after second pregnancy.

I'm afraid my eight month-old may need to be treated for Lyme's disease. We pulled two ticks off her last week and yesterday she developed a rash around the bites that looks very suspiciously like the characteristic "bulls-eye." So far, no fever or anything. We're seeing the doc tomorrow anyway, so I'll know more then, but I fear the worst. I know how devastating Lyme's can be, so I would be afraid not to treat it. But it's a 3-week antibiotic regimen! I'm wondering if you ever recommend particular herbs or homeopathics along with the antibiotics to support the spleen? Maybe even one of the BP xiao chai hu tang based formulas? Of course, homeopathic remedies would be much easier to get her to take.

Be happy. Love yourself. Don't judge others. Forgive. Always be simple. Don't make distinctions. Give up the habit of choice. Give up preferring and desiring. Let the mind dissolve. Desire only your own awareness. Give up identifying with the body and the senses. Give up your attachment to meditation and service. Give up your attachment to non-attachment. Give up giving up! Reject nothing, accept nothing. Be still. But above all, be happy. In the end you will find yourself "just by knowing how things are."

Hi all
I am a newly qualified acupuncturist and am currently treating a 30 year old female for her skin. She suffers from flare ups and up to now they have been before her period. She has alot of heat and damp going on. Her skin has been getting better with the treatments but this month for the first time she got a flare up after her period and had a bad taste in her mouth and felt like her face was aching
Her spots are very red and nodule like and appear on her temples, forehead, neck (under ears) and chin
Would anyone be able to share some enlightenment as to why the pattern has changed to flare up after her period. She was out on a night on the weekend drinking alcohol so this could have lead to the flare up as it happened the next day.
Her tongue is red and pulse wiry and she is experiencing stress in work.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated from an acupuncture point of view or patent herbs

Appolgies i have just realised this forum is for pedriatic cases so excuse my ignorance but there is any advice someone can offer it would be appreciated
Many thanks

Hi,
I was wondering if you could help me with my 4yo daughter. She seems fine during the day but as soon as she lays down at night, this phlegmy cough starts up, sounds deep in her chest. Actually, now that I think about it, she coughs a little during the day too, but not as loud and incessant as at night. Otherwise, no other sypmtoms.
Gotta go. Baby's up. Thank you for any ideas.

Hi Soma
I have a patient who I treated for Eczema at 18 mths. The Ezcema cleared with the help of strict dietary modification (no herbs). Since then and for the past 6 months his speech has gone from being able to say a few words only making a high pitched sound. His hearing has been checked and is fine.
He was very prone to damp as was on Soy formula from 4 months old. He was also prone to vomiting/reflux and was put on Zoton as Zantac did not work. Is it possible that his speech could be affected by dampness or phlegm?
He is very susceptible to colds and runny nose and his diet is no longer strict since the eczema has cleared. I am not currently treating him but his mother has asked about the lack of talking and whether acupuncture and herbs can help. He is nearly 2 years old.
I attended your paediatric seminar in Sydney in 2007.
Thank you for this forum!
Caroline
